Thanks for the reply Peter. I think we might have met before on the State.gov forums...you replied to a message from USAF..that was me :) In any case..Im keeping my fingers crossed that it works out for me. Thanks for the info on the language requirements..it's not very much info out her on the web on what GSO's actually do, but from what I can tell..it sounds like the perfect job for someone like me...much like you..I cant stay in one place for more than 3 years. The Air Force has spoiled me with moving every couple of years. LOL

Hello, Mark! Congrats on your upcoming retirement!
GSO's, may need language depending on the post. Most places however, language is probably not a requirement, but an option. In all cases, if you can schedule in the time slot for a language course before your next post, then you ca probably take it - as long as the language pertains to that post. Each post lists the language that is required, and what level you must have. This is based on the job requirements. Obviously, consular and public affairs officers have the highest need so their level must be higher. As a specialist (unlike a Generalist) foreign language is not a requirement of employment. Generalists will not get tenured without a foreign language skill. Specialists do have that requirement.

Hey Peter! Love your website...as a fellow USAF..soon to be retired MSgt... you give me lots of hope that it can be done! I'm going through the process of joining the Foreign Service as a GSO. Can you share some insight on how GSO's are looked at..what they typically do, and if they ever need to learn a language or not? As always..I look forward to your posts!

Hello Micah,

Yes, that would be very annoying to get all those emails!
I will do my best to remove you from the system, but I can not see your previous comment.

What name did you use, and email address?

Thanks, and sorry about the repeat emails!

Peter

When I originally commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments are added" checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service? Appreciate it!

Hey there - just found your notes, as well! Great resource! I also keep a travel/family blog for our 5-member family (one actually born in Pretoria!). Thanks for providing all the info, and for the beautiful images! Cheers!
