Hello Sonya!

Yes, in many circumstances dual citizens are allowed to join the Foreign Service.  We had a dual-citizen application come across my desk recently and so far there are no problems.  In most of these cases I have had the applicant sign a statement that they will not invoke their other citizen's rights or use their non U.S. passport.

There are certainly countries where the State Department will not allow a dial citizenship, and for those the applicant would have to recant their non U.S. citizenship before the application would be accepted.  Bottom line – there is no set rule – and each case is looked at individually.

You can read a lot more about this from the following PDF document:

I had found a comment out in cyber land that being a dual citizen could be a reason for non-entry. As an experienced FSO what do you think of that comment?

I have dual citizenship having been born in Australia, and wonder just how that would affect my application?
