Thanks for the comments!
Home Leave is a separate entitlement, that is accrued at the rate of 1 day per month overseas. So after a two year tour, for example, you would get 24 business days of leave to use as home leave. Home leave must be taken in U.S. territories and states only, unlike annual leave with can be used anywhere. Additionally Home-Leave is supposed to be used between overseas assignments, however, with special permission it can be deferred until after you you arrive at your next post, however, that often causes manning problems at post.

Hi Peter. First off, as a person preparing to enter the FS, I wanted to say that I love your blog - please keep sharing! It's incredibly informative about overseas life and an enjoyable read.

Second, after reading your post, I have a question for you regarding home leave if you don't mind. When we are required to take the mandatory 15 days of home leave, are we required to use our accrued annual leave for this? (ie. the 13, 20, or 26 days per year depending on years of service) Or are the 15 days of home leave granted in addition to annual leave? Thanks!
